Statement of left and anarchist organizations about “Borotba” organization (English, German, Polish, French, Serbo-Croatian, Lithuanian)

paper dragons1

We, the collectives and members of Ukrainian leftist and anarchist organizations, announce that “Borotba” union is not a part of our movement. During the whole time of this political project’s existence, its members tended to be committed to the most discredited, conservative and authoritarian “leftist” regimes and ideologies, which do not represent the interests of working classes in any way.

”Borotba” has proved itself an organization with a non-transparent funding mechanism and unscrupulous principles of cooperation. It uses hired workers, who are not even the members of the organization. The local cells of “Borotba” took part in the protest actions together with PSPU (Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, which is an anti-Semitic, racist, and clerical party, and has no relation to the world socialist movement) and with Kharkiv pro-government, anti-Semitic and homophobic group “Oplot”; and are known for their linkage with an infamous journalist O.Chalenko, who openly stands for Russian chauvinism.

Recent events demonstrate that the leadership of this union, following the example of the “Communist” Party of Ukraine, have been overtly defending the interests of president Yanukovych, justifying the use of weapons by security forces and denying the acts of unjustified violence and cruelty on their part, the use of tortures and other forms of  political terror.  The representatives of “Borotba” take an extremely biased stance concerning the composition of protest movement, which is represented both on their own web resources and in the media commentaries. According to them, the Maidan protests are supported exclusively by nationalists and radical right, and were aimed only at a coup d’etat (“fascist putsch”).

We stand on antifascist positions, and our activists have often been victims of radical rightists’ attacks. We do not support some of the Maidan’s ideas, and are against the bourgeois opposition. We also condemn conservative, nationalist, and radical right sentiments, which are tolerated in the protesters’ circles nowadays. However, we emphasize that labeling all active citizens as “fascists” is not only false, but also dangerous. This one-sidedness is fueling chauvinist hysteria and divides society, which is only favourable for the ruling class.

On January 24th, the region council deputy and “Borotba” representative Oleksiy Albu participated in the protection of Odesa region administration building against “Nazis”,  accompanied by Russian Cossacks and nationalists (“Slavic Unity”) and the members of ruling Party of Regions and Communist Party. In his later interview, he admitted his cooperation with  the Security Service of Ukraine.

On March 1st, “Borotba” activists together with pro-Putin organizations took part in the assault on Kharkiv region state administration,  which resulted in raising of a Russian flag and severe beating of many Kharkiv Maidan activists, including a leftist poet Serhiy Zhadan. The members of “Borotba” call all of this “an antifascist action” and claim that these violent actions were aimed against radical rightists.

Therefore, we conclude that the leadership of “Borotba” union not only support the authoritarian Soviet past, but also consciously manipulate  public opinion, and are acting as “pocket revolutionaries” of the ruling elites. Their activity at the moment does not have anything in common with leftist politics and class struggle, and is aimed at the support of pro-Putinist forces behind the mask of “antifascism” and “communism”. Thus, the actions of this organization are discrediting both its name (which is derived from revolutionaries-“borotbists” of the beginning of the XXth century) and all the modern Ukrainian left in general. Moreover, “Borotba” does not disdain overt lies and fact manipulations, deceiving foreign leftists and antifascists.

We urge all the conscious revolutionaries, who are still the members of “Borotba”, to leave this treacherous, pro-bourgeois union and to cease all the political relations with its leadership. We also hope that European and Russian left will reconsider their attitude to “Borotba.” The organization of this kind should be isolated.

Zajmujemy antyfaszystowską pozycję i nasi aktywiści byli ofiarami ataków skrajnej prawicy.

Wzywamy wszystkich świadomych rewolucjonistów, którzy jeszcze pozostali w organizacji Borot’ba, żeby porzucili tę zdradziecką grupę złożoną z proburżuacyjnych elementów i zerwali wszystkie polityczne związki z jej kierownictwem.

Izjava lijevih i anarhističkih organizacija o “Borotba” organizaciji

24. januara je regionalni zamjenik i predstavnik Borotbe, Oleksij Albu sudjelovao u zaštiti Odesa regijskih upravnih zgrada protiv “nacista”, u pratnji ruskih Kozaka i nacionalista (Slavensko jedinstvo) i članova vladajuće Stranke Regije i Komunističke partije.

Ni bogovi, ni gospodari, ni nacije, ni granice!

– великодержавного) šovinizmo pozicijas.

Be to, mes smerkiame konservatyvias, nacionalistines ir ultradešiniasias nuotaikas, kurios toleruojamos protesto terpėje.

Be to, ,,Borot‘ba“ nevengia atviro melo ir manipuliacijos faktais, klaidindama užsienio kairiuosius ir antifašistus.

Kviečiame visus sąmoningus revoliucionierius, kurie dar liko ,,Borot‘ba“ sąjungoje, palikti šios išdavikiškos, proburžuazinės grupuotės gretas ir visiems laikams nutraukti politinius santykius su jos vadovybe. Be to, mes tikimės, kad Europos ir Rusijos kairieji persvarstys savo požiūrį į ,,Borot‘ba“. Panašaus pobūdžio organizacija turi būti izoliuota.

Nei dievo, nei pono, nei nacijų, nei sienų!

  1. Hi! I have got two questions:
•Could you please replace the third link (a spying link by Facebook) by the direct link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GYcHGUPX90 ?
•Could you give an example where borotba suggests that “the Maidan protests are supported exclusively by nationalists and radical right, and were aimed only at a coup d’etat (‘fascist putsch’).”

    Thank you very much!

    Long live antinational solidarity!

  2. A further question: The German organisation “Red Aid” has launched a fundraising campaign to support persecuted communists, socialists and anarchists in the Ukraine. They say that they are in contact with an antifascist network in the Ukraine, but they do not specify any names. Could you give your point of view on this issue? Do you guess which network might be meant? It seems to be a plausible theory that they have connections to Borotba.

    1. Hi,
Yes, as far as I know from my German comrade, it is Borotba who asked Rote Hilfe to collect money for them. Whether to support financially those people who encourage beating up of other leftists, like it was in Kharkiv – it’s for you to decide, we only gave an information.
Here are photos of their members in Odessa: http://borotba.org/aktivistyi_odesskoj_organizaczii_borotba_proveli_akcziyu_u_memorialnoj_doski_sovetskogo_soyuza_ivanu_petrovu.html. THe local leader of Borotba, deputy of the regional council, holds a banner: “No to fascist putsch”. That was on February 23, when Yanukovych only just had been ousted.

  3. Dear Anarchist Comrades from Ukraine,

We’re trying to understand this conflict here in Germany, but there remain a few questions open. Please try to help with that.

    – concerning the regional administration in Kharkiv: Press as well as comments of left pages suggest there were Nazis present. This video was linked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOHyii1tIho supposedly showing the defense of the kharkiv administration building. Nazi symbols are present there. There are also statements of nationalists, indicating they were present. Borotba also accuses Anarchists of working together with Nazis in this occupation.
Serhj Zhadan: He was quoted in german press/TV with with a statement on the bookfair in Leipzig: “the only fascists in Ukraine are with Putin”. If this is a correct representation of his views, this is rather problematic.

    – There there were statements on “linksunten indymedia” that Borotba is a joint organization of anarchists and communists. How much truth is to that? It seems strange, if it’s concerning to other sources supposedly stalinist and gloryfying the soviet union. Borotba itself condemns “russian nationalism” in their counter statement ( http://borotba.org/statement_of_the_union_borotba_over_recent_smear_campaign_against_anti-fascists_in_ukraine.html – is there an answer by you?), can this be believed. If not, why do they state this?

    – Also there are accusations in there against Anarchists to have participated in the Maidan Movement under false flag and hid their positions. If this was true, why did it happen? When did it end? Some (concerning to criethinc) beforehand left groups, like Arsenal Fans or some “People’s bell”, have turned fascist over the course of the protest. What do you make out of this?

These are all most severe accusations (both sides accuse each other to cooperate with nazis), which are hard to believe. But then it is even more important to get things right.

  4. Borotba is a United Front (which, clearly, through this sectarian note, these supposed “anarchists” unaware of the true meaning of this word). They know that to end this fascism implemented in Ukraine (which has the support of these ultra-sectarian anarchists) is necessary to strengthen this United Front and move forward in the fight, because while Borotba is on the streets with the working class, these “anarchists” are with Maidan, Svoboda, Pravy Sekor and imperialism burning offices of the Communist Party and suppressing revolutionaries.

  5. Of course…when it comes to be united against fascists, let’s go and be divided! Of course it will be better for all of us if Ucraina will become definitively nazist and part of Nato. Somebody seems to love the fascist junta more than Borotba.
First: to be united against fascism, after: all the other questions. If you don’t like this, something is terribly wrong in your way to make politics, or you want just to help the fascists. So maybe is time for you to take a pause for reflection.

    1. Dear Myto, we (all Ukrainian leftists who signed this document) are united against all fascists, both “pro-Ukrainian” and “pro-Russian” ones. Sadly, our former comrades from Borotba have aligned themselves with one brand of the far right against the other.

  6. Comrade Andrew Brazhevsky, killed by neo-Nazis in Odessa, Ukraine, May 2, 2014
Did you know about that? So I give a shit of your super sophisticated sectarian analysys. This comrade is dead to fight against fascists, that’s what i called “Direct Action” against fascism. Waht I see here it’s just a political analysys to disrupt the antifascist unity, this will only help the fascists in Kiev.

  7. Borotba are the justified heroes of the revolution

    By Gerald Joseph Downing

On 3 March 2014 a “Statement of left and anarchist organizations about “Borotba” organization” in Ukraine was circulated among the left in Britain and Internationally by many leftists, including some leaders of the Labour Representation Committee and others, condemning Borotba in the following terms:

“We, the collectives and members of Ukrainian leftist and anarchist organizations, announce that “Borotba” union is not a part of our movement. During the whole time of this political project’s existence, its members tended to be committed to the most discredited, conservative and authoritarian “leftist” regimes and ideologies, which do not represent the interests of working classes in any way.

“Borotba” has proved itself an organization with a non-transparent funding mechanism and unscrupulous principles of cooperation. It uses hired workers, who are not even the members of the organization. The local cells of “Borotba” took part in the protest actions together with PSPU (Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine, which is an anti-Semitic, racist, and clerical party, and has no relation to the world socialist movement) and with Kharkiv pro-government, anti-Semitic and homophobic group “Oplot”; and are known for their linkage with an infamous journalist O.Chalenko, who openly stands for Russian chauvinism.”

The signatories included the Autonomous Workers Union, Independent Student Union “Direct Action”, Editorial board of Tovaryshka, Anarchist Black Cross – Ukraine, Anarcha-feminist collective Good Night Macho Pride, Anti-Fascist Action Ukraine and the Left Opposition. They proudly announced they “stand on antifascist positions” and that they did not “support some of the Maidan’s ideas”

    but:

“The representatives of “Borotba” take an extremely biased stance concerning the composition of protest movement, which is represented both on their own web resources and in the media commentaries. According to them, the Maidan protests are supported exclusively by nationalists and radical right, and were aimed only at a coup d’etat (“fascist putsch”).”

Never has a statement been proved so wrong so quickly; the signatories of this document have been condemned by history, they are the pro imperialist reactionaries and the Borotba are the justified heroes of the revolution. On 3 May Borotba revealed the full extent of the progress of “some of the Maidan’s ideas” that these pusillanimous idiots apparently demurred a little from:

“On May 2, under the pretext of the so-called march ‘For unity of Ukraine’ (that was dated to football match ‘Chernomorets’ – ‘Metallist’) – the paramilitary squads of Ukrainian nationalist were brought together to Odessa from all over the country. They arrived by buses and by trains. From the very beginning – when they just started to gather on ‘Sobornaya’ square – among ordinary ultra-right fans too many well-equipped paramilitaries could be seen. They had shields, helmets, bats, traumatic and service weapons. Mostly – men about 30-40 years old who were evidently not football fans. Some of them had shields where it was written: ’14th hundred of Maidan self-guard’. And these nationalist paramilitaries became the main striking force of bloody massacre of Odessa residents on ‘Kulikovo pole’ square.

Neo-Nazis began to pelt the tent camp with Molotovs and set it ablaze. Activists from the protest camp were forced to retreat to the nearby building of ‘House of Trade Unions’. When trying to kill Odessa residents, ultrarights set ablaze the ground floor of the ‘House of Trade-Unions. And the fire spread rather quickly over the building.

People began to jump out of the windows of the upper floors – trying to escape the fire. But on the ground, they were finished off by nationalist paramilitaries. Thus, our comrade – a member of “Borotba” union Andrew Brazhevsky – was killed. Deputy of regional council Vyacheslav Markin (a fellow of the leader of ‘Borotba’ Odessa Alexey Albu) was also brutally killed the same way when he jumped out of window. Over 40 activists were burnt alive, poisoned by smoke or were murdered by the Nazis while trying to escape from a burning building. Fortunately, most of our comrades managed to escape alive. Some of our comrades, including the leader of Odessa “Borotba” and city council deputy Alexei Albu were severely beaten by bats and kicked. They have numerous bruises, broken bones and head injuries.

The massacre in Odessa was organized by Kiev junta so that to intimidate the population that is discontent with the new regime, and so that to eliminate the active fighters against new regime. The evidence of it is the fact that far-right militants were brought together and well-equipped. Moreover, the police inaction as well as the fact that attack of ultra-rightists in Odessa was synchronized with the “anti-terrorist operation” in Slavyansk – are also the evidence of it. The massacre in Odessa reveals that Kiev regime of nationalists and oligarchs is rapidly grows into the outright terrorist dictatorship of the fascist style.”

The left in Britain and internationally is split by these events. Leaders of Socialist Resistance Duncan Chapel and Liam Mac Uaid (Russians are the aggressors!) and their bogus “Fourth International” have blood on their hands for their defence of this illegal coup regime (only “some of the Maidan’s ideas”, of course) as have all those who defended the Maidan as some kind of “contradictory” movement and tried to tell us the working class of the eastern Ukraine was just as bad. When you cannot take a clear and unequivocal stance against fascists who are, in Trotsky’s famous words, “the storm troopers of finance capital” you have crossed red class lines.

Now the task of the genuine revolutionary left is to organise international solidarity campaign with the revolution in the eastern Ukraine and defend it against these fascistic assaults by the regime installed by the CIA. It will need to gather food, medicine, money and every other kind of assistance. And it will need to demand support from the Labour and TU leaders, beginning with the leftist candidates for the RMT General Secretary; Steve Hedley, Alex Gordon, John Leach etc. And Ken Loach will surely put his shoulder to the wheel in this the most testing issue for the global working class since the Spanish Revolution.

    1. be careful my anarchist comrades, his german is full of errors, sounds like a translation programme… he never is from berlin!

  9. This is what you all have time for while your country is fallen under the Nazi yoke? This attack on a group that you should be allies with?

You are Idiots. Total idiots. Assuming you’re not simply CIA.

Notice that this spurious attack has drawn more attention than anything on your mostly comment-free site. And it is first to appear when you search “borotba” on Google. Does this please you?

Stand together or die alone. It’s clear to the whole world you prefer the second option.
